Musings of a Music Educator

Music education has always been about more than teaching notes, rhythms, and performances. It is about people, relationships, community, and the ways music shapes how we experience the world and one another. Through these articles, I explore the questions, challenges, and moments of growth that define our work as educators.

The Musings of a Music Educator series began as a space for reflection—an opportunity to examine the realities of teaching, leadership, and learning in a profession that is both deeply rewarding and constantly evolving. As educators, we navigate change, celebrate successes, confront challenges, and continually seek ways to better serve our students and communities. Writing allows me to pause, reflect, and engage in conversations that extend beyond the walls of my classroom.

These articles draw from my experiences as a music educator, researcher, and advocate. They explore topics such as community, Restorative Practices, student engagement, professional identity, and the social and emotional dimensions of music learning. Whether discussing the challenges facing education today, the importance of creating brave and compassionate learning environments, or the lessons we learn alongside our students, my goal is to encourage thoughtful dialogue and meaningful reflection.

I write because I believe music educators have important stories to tell and important questions to ask. If these reflections inspire a new perspective, spark a conversation, or remind another educator that they are not navigating this work alone, then they have served their purpose.
